Buyers researching wood pellet suppliers often come across both “ENplus” and “ISO 17225” listed on spec sheets and certification pages – sometimes side by side, sometimes used almost interchangeably. They’re related, but they’re not the same thing, and understanding the difference is useful when comparing suppliers or reading a certificate.
ISO 17225 is the international technical standard that defines solid biofuel specifications and classes, with Part 2 covering graded wood pellets specifically. It’s the document that actually defines what separates a Class A1 pellet from a Class A2 or Class B pellet – parameters like ash content, mechanical durability, diameter, moisture content, and calorific value.
ISO 17225-2 is what a laboratory tests a pellet sample against. It’s a specification, not a certification program – there’s no single body that “issues” ISO 17225 compliance the way a certification scheme issues a certificate.
ENplus is a certification and licensing scheme, run by the European Pellet Council, that uses the ISO 17225-2 quality classes (A1, A2, B) as its technical foundation – but adds requirements ISO 17225 alone doesn’t cover: mandatory third-party auditing of the producer, traceability requirements through the supply chain (producer, trader, and in some cases end-user certification), and ongoing compliance monitoring rather than a one-time test.
In practical terms: a pellet can technically meet ISO 17225-2 Class A2 specifications in a lab test without the producer holding ENplus certification. ENplus certification is the additional layer that gives a buyer assurance the classification is being maintained consistently over time, under independent audit – not just verified once.
For an industrial buyer sourcing pellets for boiler fuel or biomass power generation, this distinction affects how much weight to put on a supplier’s claims:

Buyers with strict compliance or reporting requirements – particularly in regulated European markets – often specifically require ENplus certification rather than a self-declared ISO 17225 specification.
It’s worth noting that ENplus A1 and A2 grades are primarily associated with residential and commercial heating applications – pellet stoves and small boilers, where low ash content and high durability directly affect appliance performance. Industrial-grade pellets used in large-scale biomass power plants, including the majority of Vietnam’s export volume, are typically specified and traded under separate industrial-grade parameters within the ISO 17225 framework, reflecting the different combustion technology used at utility scale.
For buyers, the practical takeaway is to ask suppliers directly which classification their product is specified and tested against, and whether that classification is backed by third-party certification or by internal quality control alone – both are common in the industry, but they answer different questions. Not every reliable industrial-grade supplier holds ENplus certification specifically, since that scheme is most commonly associated with residential and commercial heating pellets rather than utility-scale industrial fuel – so its absence on a supplier’s certificate list isn’t automatically a red flag for industrial buyers.
