It’s a fair question, and one that experienced buyers are right to ask: with a newer biomass fuel technology drawing investment and policy attention, what does that mean for the conventional wood pellet market that Vietnam and producers like Phu Tai have built over the past decade? Here’s an honest read on where things stand.
Black pellets and white wood pellets are, for the most part, solving different problems for different buyers. Black pellets fit coal co-firing conversions a real and growing use case, but a specific one. White wood pellets remain the standard fuel for dedicated biomass power generation, a segment that continues to represent the large majority of global biomass fuel demand, including the bulk of Japan and South Korea’s import volume.
Nothing about torrefaction technology changes the fundamentals of dedicated biomass power plants already built, financed, and operating around conventional wood pellet handling. Continued growth in absolute demand, even as black pellets scale. Japan’s biomass power capacity has been expanding for years, and that expansion has been built almost entirely around conventional wood pellets. New dedicated biomass plants coming online in the coming years will, in the near term, largely continue that pattern the capital and permitting cycles for large power projects run long, and plants already in the pipeline aren’t being redesigned around a still-scaling fuel technology.
Certification and traceability expectations will keep tightening for white pellets too. If anything, the attention on newer biomass fuel categories has coincided with buyers generally raising their bar for verified sourcing, not lowering it. FSC, SBP, and ISO 17225 compliance are likely to become more consistently expected across the board, not less relevant.
Buyer sophistication is rising. As the market matures and buyers gain more years of direct sourcing experience, procurement decisions increasingly hinge on supplier fundamentals certification, production capacity, raw material traceability, and long-term reliability rather than on the pellet category itself. That shift raises the bar for every producer, regardless of fuel type.
The strategic read here isn’t “black pellets are a threat to respond to” it’s that the conventional wood pellet market’s growth path runs through the same fundamentals it always has: certified, traceable raw material; consistent production quality at scale; and the operational discipline to serve long-term supply contracts reliably.

If anything, the fundamentals that matter certification, traceability, and reliable production capacity are becoming more important, not less, as the overall biomass fuel market matures around it.
